Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 June 2026
Show Up is built to get you out of the house and into a real place with a real person. We collect only what we need to make that work, and we never sell your data.
Who we are
Show Up ("Show Up", "we", "us") operates a mobile app and this website from Abuja, Nigeria. This policy explains how we handle personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and other applicable law. For privacy questions, contact us at [email protected].
What we collect
We collect only the data needed to match you and run the service:
- Your phone number — to create and verify your account with a one-time code (sent by SMS).
- Profile details you provide — first name, date of birth (to confirm you're 18+ and for age-based matching), neighbourhood, vibe tags, interests, and your weekly availability.
- Approximate location — your neighbourhood and coordinates, used to match you with people and spots near you.
- Contacts you choose to share — if you use the "find friends" feature, we check which of your contacts are already on Show Up so you can invite them. We do this using one-way hashed phone numbers and do not store your full address book.
- Activity on the service — matches, the spots you vote on, outings, check-ins, reliability strikes, messages with your match, and feedback you leave.
- Device & technical data — a push-notification token, app version, and basic logs needed to operate and secure the service.
- Waitlist details — if you join the waitlist on this site, the name, phone number and/or email you submit.
No payment data. Show Up does not take a stake, deposit or any payment. We hold no card or bank details. Commitment runs on a reliability/strike system, not money.
How we use your data
- To create your account and verify it's really you.
- To match you with one person, or a friend you invite, and to help you both pick a spot and a time.
- To send service messages and push notifications about your match, outing and check-in.
- To run the reliability system (strikes for cancelling a locked outing or no-showing) so people who show up have a good experience.
- To keep the community safe — handling blocks, reports, and abuse.
- To operate, debug, secure and improve the service.
We rely on your consent, the performance of our terms with you, and our legitimate interest in running a safe, working service, as the legal bases for this processing.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your data or share it for advertising. We share limited data with service providers who help us run Show Up, under contract and only as needed:
- SMS provider (e.g. Termii) — to send your verification codes.
- Email provider (e.g. Resend) — to send waitlist and service emails.
- Maps provider (Google Maps) — to show spots and locations.
- Hosting & infrastructure (DigitalOcean) and push notifications (Expo) — to run the app.
- The person you're matched with — sees your first name, age, neighbourhood, shared vibe/interests, and your messages. They never see your phone number or contacts. You meet by a private two-word code, not by sharing photos.
We may also disclose data where required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
Your rights & choices
Under the NDPA you can request to access, correct, or delete your personal data, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent. You can edit most details in the app, and you can delete your account at any time, which removes your profile data. To make a request, email [email protected].
We keep your data only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. A hashed record of deleted phone numbers may be retained to prevent abuse.
Security & children
We protect your data with measures such as encrypted connections, hashed verification codes, and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe. Show Up is for adults only — you must be 18 or older to use it.
