Accessibility Statement
Last updated: 14 June 2026
Show Up is committed to making our Service accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We believe meeting people and exploring your city should be available to all, and we are working continuously to improve the accessibility of our app and website.
1. Our standards
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. These guidelines - developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) - explain how to make digital content accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.
We also work toward compliance with EN 301 549, the European standard for accessibility requirements for ICT products and services.
2. Accessibility measures
2.1 Design principles
Our app and website are built around four principles:
- Perceivable - information is presented in ways users can perceive. Text alternatives are provided for non-text content. Colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
- Operable - interface components are operable through multiple input methods, including keyboard navigation and screen readers. Touch targets are sized appropriately. Users have enough time to read and use content.
- Understandable - text is written in clear, simple language. Navigation is consistent and predictable. Error messages explain what went wrong and how to fix it.
- Robust - content is built to be compatible with current and future assistive technologies, including popular screen readers.
2.2 Specific measures
| Area | Measure |
|---|---|
| Screen readers | The app is tested with VoiceOver (iOS) and TalkBack (Android). Interface elements include accessibility labels, hints, and roles. Dynamic content changes are announced to assistive technology. |
| Keyboard navigation | All functionality on the website is operable through a keyboard. Focus indicators are visible. The tab order follows a logical sequence. |
| Colour & contrast | Text meets or exceeds WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios. The app supports both light and dark modes, respecting your device settings. |
| Text scaling | The app respects your device's font size settings. Content reflows properly when text is scaled up to 200%. |
| Motion & animation | Animations are respectful of the prefers-reduced-motion system setting. Where animations are used, they are subtle and functional, not purely decorative. |
| Touch targets | Interactive elements are at least 44×44 points to accommodate users with motor disabilities. |
| Error handling | Form errors include clear text descriptions and, where possible, suggestions for correction. Errors are announced to screen readers. |
3. Known limitations & alternatives
We recognise that there is more work to be done. Some areas we are actively working to improve:
- Map interactions. The map views used for Discovery, spot browsing, and directions rely on Google Maps and Apple Maps, which have their own accessibility profiles. Some map gestures - such as pinch-to-zoom - may be difficult for users with motor disabilities. As an alternative, you can search for spots by text and view results in a list format.
- Voice notes. Our encrypted voice notes feature does not currently include automatic transcription. We are exploring transcription options that preserve the end-to-end encryption model.
- Real-time features. Chat and meetup coordination update in real time. We are working to ensure these updates are properly communicated to assistive technology without being disruptive.
- Third-party content. Some features rely on third-party services (such as Google Maps) whose accessibility we cannot fully control.
4. How we test
We regularly test the Service using:
- Built-in accessibility inspection tools in Xcode (Accessibility Inspector) and Android Studio (Accessibility Scanner).
- Manual testing with screen readers (VoiceOver and TalkBack).
- Keyboard-only navigation testing on our website.
- Contrast checkers and colour-blindness simulators.
- Ongoing training for our development team on accessibility best practices.
5. Feedback & contact
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of Show Up. If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please tell us:
- Email: [email protected]
- Describe: the issue you experienced, which screen or feature it involved, and the device and assistive technology you were using (if any).
We aim to acknowledge feedback within 5 business days and to provide a substantive response within 20 business days. We take all accessibility reports seriously and use them to prioritise improvements.
